Daily Post Word Prompt: WINSOME

MEANING: Charming, captivating, attractive, personable, lovable

 

Winsome.

A real old-fashioned word.

One that you don’t hear nowadays. One that you don’t usually even come across in modern narratives or other contemporary creative written works.

I’d heard of it of course. Had come across the word in my reading, many years ago (seems like centuries!). I have no idea where, or in what story.

Perhaps it was Emily Bronte. It sounds like the kind of word she would use. If it was her, I am sure she was not describing Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights– oh no! Of that, I’m positive.

So, I looked up the word just to be sure of its precise meaning, even though I had a vague recollection of its definition. I checked my Chambers 21 Century and the Oxford illustrated dictionaries, plus Rogets Thesaurus. From these resources I got: charming, captivating, attractive, personable, lovable.

Everything I’d like to be. Everything I’d like others to think of when they think about me. But it’s unlikely. If I was honest, could I say it of myself truthfully (hand-on-heart truthfully)?

No!

For people to make that assessment of me, I believe it would have to be something that applies to me most of the time. I can be charming. Some may even describe me as attractive. Lovable? Perhaps – but not always! Captivating? Erm – I don’t think so!

What would it be like to meet such a person, to live with such a person, who could truthfully fit that description?

On one hand it could be lovely. Perhaps you’d be attracted to them much as a moth is attracted to a flame or incandescent light bulb, but would you survive? Would you be happy?

You might be captivated by the stories they tell, the experiences they’ve had etc., but would you feel dull next to them?

Would you feel you had never lived?

Would you examine the unexciting ordinariness of your present existence and begin to feel discontented?

Would you be forever competing for their attention as other men, women and children flock around them, absorbed by the words of their mouth, wanting to bask within the sunshine of their attention?

Would it become tiring, even annoying?

Well, over to you dear reader. What do you think? What do you say? Would you describe yourself as winsome?
