We are coming towards the end of this month and therefore the end of my creative challenge. I hope you have been enjoying these particular posts.
Isn’t it amazing what you can “see”, yeah what creative thoughts can be sparked once you put your mind to it?
Even if you did not wish to participate in this challenge by sharing your ideas, I do hope that you’ve tried the exercise for yourself and found something useful, even inspirational as a result.
Anyway, here’s what I’d like to share with you today.
As I study the above scenario, I turn my attention to what is happening beneath the woman in this picture.
If you look closely, the area between the two structures representing 2017 and 2018, is taken up by the sea and an island.
In literature, the sea is often a metaphor for sorrow, sadness or troubles.
In the Bible, we are told of a time when Jesus was asleep in the boat whilst a storm raged and the sea became turbulent, causing the disciples to cry out in fear.
The woman in the picture seems almost oblivious to what lies beneath her. She occupies and operates within a higher realm. This says to me that this woman has decided not to allow her problems, or her past to interfere with where she is aiming to go. As mentioned in my previous post (Creative Challenge 6), this woman is forward looking and future-focussed.
You will note that the body of water in our challenge image appears calm.
In the biblical account mentioned above, Jesus spoke to the wind and the waves and they became calm under his authority and command.
I believe that this image of a calm sea beneath the woman in the picture reflects the quality of her prayer life and her relationship with God. They are both at a level where she is aware that no matter what happens, God is in complete control.
Below her may lie the sea of uncertainty but she is too busy looking towards her dreams, too busy looking at the one who has the power to guide her towards her destiny, to allow those uncertainties to seriously hamper or halt her progress.
And whilst I’m thinking along these lines, the following scripture came to mind:
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
(Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV)
Again, as previously mentioned, when you examine the above scenario, you will notice an island. In his poem, No Man is an Island, John Donne (a metaphysical poet), uses the metaphor of an island to say that as human beings, as a society, we are impacted by whatever we do. Our acts of commission, even of omission, affect someone else.
I therefore see the woman in our challenge image as someone who is focussed, yes, upon achieving her dreams and goals, upon fulfilling her destiny but, she also realises that in pursuing these things, there can be no greater joy or satisfaction than using her abilities, skills and resources to serve God and bless others.
What say you?
- What do you see?
- How are you influencing the lives of others?

But before you go, may I ask a favour?
Would you tell others about this creative challenge? It is coming to a close and will end on 30 September 2018 but there’s still plenty of time for you to join in. So c’mon! Make my day! 🙂
